Acupuncture for Womans Health

A woman’s body goes through many different hormonal cycles in the course of a lifetime. These changes occur primarily during puberty, pregnancy, and eventually through menopause as a result of normal hormonal fluctuations. A woman’s body is in a constant state of change. Acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine work to restore hormonal and emotional balance and overall vitality to women during any stage of their journey.

Acupuncture and other modalities of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) have been used to treat women’s health for many centuries. During all stages of the life span, acupuncture and herbal medicine can help with the ever changing cycles women experience, including:

  • Menstrual issues: Period pain (dysmenorrhoea), irregular, heavy or absent bleeding (amenorrhoea), endometriosis and polycystic ovary disease. Acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine is a particularly effective treatment for young women’s debilitating symptoms such as period pain, bloating and mood swings.
  • Fertility: Regulating cycles and building qi (energy) and blood to optimise healthy hormone cycles and thus fertility. Infertility can be caused by hormonal imbalances which may stem from emotional issues, physical strain or excessive stress. As the reproductive system is not essential for every day survival, it is often one of the areas that the body will sacrifice when under stress or if someone is generally run down. This can impact on either men or women and can prevent conception from occurring. TCM treatment combining acupuncture and herbal medicine will enhance the conception process and encourage a healthy foetus to develop. Providing there is no serious structural problem or pathology preventing conception from occurring such as fallopian tube obstruction or viral infections, TCM is an effective tool for fertility issues.
  • Pregnancy: Various issues throughout the different stages of pregnancy, such as morning sickness, sciatica and carpal tunnel syndrome, insomnia, anxiety and depression. Western medicine treatment or medications are often inappropriate to use due to the pregnancy. Acupuncture and Chinese medicine can provide safe and effective treatment.
  • Menopause: Night sweats, hot flushes, vaginal dryness, emotional issues – anxiety, depression and insomnia. Menopause represents a change in female physiological processes. This can result in symptoms such as fatigue, night sweats and irritability. Acupuncture and herbal medicine can eliminate the symptoms while promoting weight loss and better sleep patterns. It can also relieve pain, emotional stress, and stabilize mood swings. Acupuncture treatments can also minimize osteoporosis and poor mental function by increasing clarity and focus while also treating anxiety and depression often associated with menopause. Results depend on the individual case, but substantial relief can often be achieved quite quickly.

We recommend patients come in for acupuncture treatments once or twice a week to help with any of these conditions. To help regulate period cycle and work on fertility, we recommend one treatment a week for three complete period cycles.
